Long trip UK to Malta

Help I am taking a boat from the UK to Malta in May 2009.
I have loads of experience in the Med Balearics,SoF, Italy, Corsica, Sardinia, etc. But would apreciate any help with good marinas with visitors moorings and fuel between UK and maybe Valencia area. I expect to cover aprox 200 miles per day average so any great recomendations regarding ports / Marinas with good facilities, would be appreciated. I have not done the trip from the UK to the Med before so any experienced advice from members who may have done the trip would be very appreciated..

Re: Long trip UK to Malta

Do you mean UK to Valencia or UK to Valetta?

Re: Long trip UK to Malta

Pretty sure he means valencia (?)

GSkip, search for poster Hurricane's report of UK to almost Barcelona. That covers stops, refules, etc, and pretty much covers the first half of your journey. Hurric's trip was this year and the report was on this forum a few months ago, and in MBY in print a month or two ago

What ya gonna do when you get to Malta? And what sort of boat are you doing the trip in?

Re: Long trip UK to Malta

Without looking at a map, is it not shorter to coast hop along the N African coast to Malta from Gib rather than do a loop via Spain, the Balearics, Sardinia and Sicily which is why I presume he said Valencia? Anyway Valencia seems too far north to be part of this route 'coz you'd probably leave the Spanish coast around Alicante for the crossing to the Balearics

Re: Long trip UK to Malta

Assume from your profile that you do this for a living in which case speed and not fuel cost is your major consideration?
If boat not too large an alternative might be the French inland rivers/ canals and a substantial reduction in the potential fuel bill.

Re: Long trip UK to Malta

Falmouth, Bayona, (Baiona??), Cascais, Lagos, Rota, Almerimar, Cartagena, San Antonio - Ibiza, Puerto Andratx, Illetas, Puertocolon - Majorca,to Villasimius - Sardinia, Naples, Amalfi, Stromboli, Vulcano, Riposto, Taormina, Syracusa, Porto Palo, Valletta.

is the route I took, (stopping for 9 months in Lagos), and taking 3 months from there to Valletta.

Excellent fuel and marinas at:

Baiona, Cascais, Lagos, (Lagos fuel station only accepted cash in 2007), Rota and Almerimar. Cartagena, (nice marina, but we couldnt get fuel on a Sunday here, but there is a fuel pump on the quay, so not sure what was going on at a so called superyacht marina).

Re: Long trip UK to Malta

Thanks chaps this is to all of you and thanks for replying. The trip is a maiden shake down on a Sunseeker Pred 92 which I have agreed to skipper for the next three years. I have a Training Centre Based in Menorca and so have loads of experience within the Med and have run charters all around the SoF Italy Corsica, Sardinia, etc etc. However apart from a few training passages whilst working for a spell in the Solent over to France and back I have not done the run down from UK to the med. I see no real problem with it. However over the years I have found that the best way to find the great overnight spots and good accesable fuel bays is to ask other skippers or crews. so that is the reason for saying from UK to area valencia as thats on my stomping grond. within the trip I will be spending a couple of weeks in Menorca to fix all the fallen of bits and velcro back the roof pannels and pick up the owners family for the second part of the trip Menorca to Malta with a few days spent in Sardinia and Corsica then Elba and then down the Italian coast and on to sicily then Malta. Then Guests off home by air and I return to summer berth Mahon. So I would apreciate any great recomendations for the trip between UK and Southern Spain let's say Marbella area particularly Bay of Biscay and Portugese coast. any great marinas with good fuel facilities and a decent bar for a couple of pints all will help ease the presure when it comes to almanacs and charts on the dining room table.
Thanks very much chaps and if you ever find yourself slipping into the beautiful port of Mahon give me shout and meet for a pint. quite good a fixing berths as well!!!
