I am currently taking warfarin following heart surgery some years ago.
The local NHS blood suckers will only issue me with a 3month supply.
That will put a dent in the cruising plans (dreams?), anyone else getting round this problem.

Not yet

I am Diabetic and am currently restricted to a 28 day supply. I am trying to build a stronger relationship with the surgery in an effort secure a longer supply. a year or so would be good.

Any ideas?

I have no experience of either of your medical problems, but I have visited doctors and hospitals in France and Greece, where I was prescribed medicines and had surgery, all at either little or no cost under my EHIC card. Is it not possible to obtain your medications by visiting a local doctor? Maybe armed with a note from your UK doctor?

I suppose that some medications have a fairly brief shelf life, in which case this has to be the only option for longer term cruising.

I was told by my doctor that if I had a repeat prescription form then any European/Caribbean pharmacy would supply me with the neccessary medicines. The downside is that you have to pay the full price rather than the subsidised UK price.

My particular problem is that I have to have a blood test to dictate the amount I take.

Did you know sometimes the retail price is less than the prescription price.

Our next door neigbhor pops the rpeat perscription in every 2 months and posts the drugs out to me. Your EHIC card should get you the local subsidised service in what ever country you are in though the precise system varies a lot. Here in Portugal you go the the health centre pay your 8 euro fee and get seen pretty fast and if needed a perscription some of which is subsidided and some not. Mrs Maxi gets her pernicious aneamia jab on demand though she tops up on the drugs when we go home.

I too am on heart medication [but not warfarin].

Planetdrugs a Canadian based online pharmacy are reliable and reasonably priced although they do not mail to all parts of the world. However it is always worth checking the local pharmacies. I have just found that the Peoples Pharmacy in Kingstown St Vincent undecuts them on generic Plavix amongst others.

I have also found that a local doctor will often write a prescrition for you if you take your old one in with you. Ask for a 3 month supply of your drugs and 3 repeats.

Hi all it is possible to get the drugs you need in GREECE albeit under a different name. I go to the IKA doctor first and get free prescriptions for most items (just show my EHIC card at reception). PSA tests are free and I had an eye test with an opthalmologist at half price in Lefkas.

Unlike many people we do not return to the UK, so we have to depend on whatever local services there are!

Good luck

Peter

You can buy most pharmacuiticals from the pharmacy without prescription, my wife takes beta blockers, 2.4€ a box, against 7 odd quid in the UK, my daughter gets her epilepsy meds the same way, if you need to see a doc just pop into the health center with your ehic card.

According to the EHIC websites, only medical conditions which arise while you are on a temporary visit abroad are covered. That sounds as if repeat prescriptions for chronic conditions aren't.

Out of UK more than 3 months

Be careful

Thanks to a 'kind' neighbour we managed to get kicked out of the NHS for being out of the UK for more than 3 months. - Got back in by asking nicely though!

Regards

Jim
