Sorry to drag the subject back to matters pertaining to sailing, but I'm planning the delivery of my new boat from Hamble to Shotley at the end of the month, and I wondered if anyobody knew the long range weather synopsis, or how to get it? I've got a whole bunch of resources bookmarked for short range weather - up to 3-4-5 days max. As I do both sailing and private flying I'm pretty clued up on real short term meteorology, but am completely lost when it comes to long range estimates. Help /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I recall before the last Cherbourg outing people were trying to get forecasts up to about 2 weeks before the event. Waste of time IMO, time to start looking is a few days beforehand.

It is impossible. The thing to do (and it can be very sucessful - its what professional delivery skippers do) is the reverse - rather than plan to take some days off when the long range forecast looks good, keep your diary flexible and take some days off as soon as you get a "window".

Two years to the day, almost, we ago did Hamble / Suffolk Yacht Harbour in 27 hours, in a Westerly, on that basis. Fair wind up the Channel backed as we came into the Downs, carried the tide... ;-)

unfortunately due to work commitments, myself and my crew have had to book this particular week off well in advance, so don't have a great deal of choice.

Let's hope you're as lucky as we were 8 yrs ago - did delivery from Solent to Dartmouth at end of March - got seriously sunburned and had champagne picnic off the Bill - only wish we'd had a bit more wind but still a wonderful experience ! And that was a fixed date as we had children booked to assist.

Long range forecast

Tommorow fairly certain

Day after 66% chance

3rd day 33% chance

After that anybodies guess

The day after the 2004 Round the Island I went from Hamble to Lymington

forecast was 3/4 sw. we had 6/7 sw.

So, they got the direction right

Ever heard of "directionally correct" financial outlooks???
