Hi,

On the Icom website it says :
Icom UK will be launching three new marine VHF radios on stand B172 at the London Boatshow 2013. We are so excited about this new range of products that we will keep them firmly under wraps until the opening of the show.

So did anyone go today and care to say what was new on the Icom stand in terms of VHF Radios ?

Thanks,

Boo2

Well, they've put the new stuff up on their website now, it's here for anyone who is interested. The new items are a mid-priced radio with noting particular to distinguish it from any other in the same price bracket and also a black-box radio that is entirely controlled from the command mic. This is an interesting idea that would be useful if the mic was wireless remote, but wired ? Dunno.

I was hoping for a marine vhf radio with built-in AIS but they don't have any plans for that atm. :(

We had the conversation about the wired/wireless command point. A number of different reasons but mainly if it's wired it doesn't have to be charged and you always know where to find it. Crunch, WTF? oh bum we're sinking....now where did I leave the DSC command mic? Here? No, here? Nope...ah there it is, oh bum it's out of power. Can we stop sinking while we charge the radio commander?

:D

The other products was an entry level fixed Icom £180 ish, and a HH VHF with the ability to record 1 min of received voice.

AND

A LBS show special of 5 year warranty, I now have an Icom M23 that was 20 pounds less on the MES stand than on the internet and came with a cigarette and AC charger.

Noticed the I has been dropped from LIBS...... :D

yeah..... he spent £40 on travel and entry to save £20 on a radio.... :D

Ah ha, and there in lies my cunning plan....

father works for FGW group, so I get heavily discounted rail travel (£10 from Plymouth to Paddington in first class, RATHER!)

Tickets from tickets for troops..... thank you LIBS for the free tickets...

et voila .... I saved!!!!!!! :D :cough: :splutter: £10

I love being a freeloader, however, no one got rich from spending their money! :D

Are they allowed to do that? Give out cigarettes and stuff?

The cig is to smoke while you wait for the valves in the icom to warm up!:)

This is why they have no plans for an ais model - difficult to implement using valves - needs an awful lot of ECL82s!

Not at all a new idea - Raymarine have had them for donkey's years, and there was a pre-DSC Sailor (I think) with a blue plastic "telephone" handset controller that seemed to show up on small ships as a secondary set.

I might have considered it if I'd known (and the price was sensible) as my new chart table is rather cramped and it would have been good to free up some panel space. But I have a GX2100E on the way now.
