London Boat show and Nic 38

I thought I'd let you know that "Nutmeg of Shoreham" is going to be part of the main feature on World Cruising at the Boat Show in January. See http://www.londonboatshow.com/2013/whats_on/attractions__events/world_cruising.aspx for details. We were contacted by World Cruising who were looking for "real" cruising boats to be part of their display, and they were really keen to get a true family boat as part of the exhibition.

She is not mine, belongs to a friend, although I have one of them to.

Come along and see her, talk to the owner Ollie and his family who took her across the pond and more.
 
Is it just me, but the Boat Show is not enticing me one iota, despite these 'real' boats being on display.

Acres of fly-bridge polyester bling, about as appealing as a day at Blue Waters with the mother-in-law!

My Bav was a real cruising boat but somehow I can't ever see it being on a cruising club stand. I looked at Nich 38's but settled for a Bavaria when I did my last cruise. Not sure what they are trying to show people by displaying an old classic though. But then much of the show ideas are a bit abstract.

I met them in St Lucia. Lovely family and lovely boat.

We all make choices about our boats, and delighted I chose a Nic 38 for many subjective reasons I suppose, but somehow I just cannot imagine a Bav becoming an 'old classic' ..no disrespect to Bav's intended..
I think it is good for the show to present real life people who have cruised and sailed in the way they have.

I don't know why so many people have a downer on LIBS. For me the timing is ideal, smack in the middle of our off season as opposed to prime sailing weekends and I always look forward to making a weekend of it. To my way of thinking a weekend in Southampton doesn't quite do it...........
 
I think it is really interesting for people who are still dreaming, to see the boats that people have cruised on but they always seem to show old, cramped slow heavy boats (apologies to Nic and Rival owners). I do quite like Nic's and boats like Rivals and have sailed them many 00's of miles and I don't want to pick a my boats better because fight, but I just get bored with the cruisers boat always being classic long keel heavy displacement.

But then I drive a Volvo 240 on epic journeys towing horses from Devon to North of Stockholm, so maybe in some ways I'm in the heavy displacement category as well just not on the water?
 
One incentive to go to the show is the MDL stand.
If you are not an MDL berth holder it's worth popping in to get a free voucher for an overnight stay. (You have to sign up for their Club Outlook if not already a member.)
However, for some it means the show could pay for itself.
