I have a Navico DL200 log with a broken transducer. It reads perfecrly if I touch the input wires intermittentl via a resistor, so I know the main instrument is OK. Can anyone tell me what components were used in the paddle wheel transducer so I can build a new one? I've tried everywhere I know to find one. Or has anyone got a transducer from another manufacturer they don't need anymore to see I can see if it will work? It seems that anything which gives a make/break on the 5 volt line will do.

I believe these are simply a reed switch activated by a magnet or magnets in the paddlewheel itself.

Could be worth checking the paddlewheel to see if the magnet has fallen out. someone once showed me one which rotated freely but did not read. On examining it there was a hole through the base of one of the paddles about 3mm diameter.

We surmised that this must have held the triggering magnet. Then came the difficult part, finding a small rod magnet. He eventually found something suitable which was superglued in place and operation restored.

May not be your problem, but worth checking.

Try testing the impeller tips with a nail to see if your magnets are still present. I seem to recall that there are two to keep the impeller balanced. Otherwise saw off the bottom of the transducer about 10/15mm above the flat part of the transducer base. You will find a reed switch potted in resin inside. I fixed mine about 10 years ago and I got a reed from Radiospares (RS Components), if I remember correctly. Do make sure that you re-pot properly - if your end drops off, water can get in (or so they say!)
