My new log has gone silent on me. The paddle-wheel seems to turn ok but the LCD remains at zero (although the depth sounder part is ok). What should I set my multi-meter to in order to check if an impulse is making it to the unit?

Beginning to sound like a return to manufacturer job...

I'm not sure you can test for a signal with an ordinary test meter, but are you sure it's not just weed on the impeller, I have to remove mine quite often to clean out the weed that gets inside the impeller around the spindle, it doesn't take much to stop the thing from working.

I'll have another look tomorrow, although I'm in a fairly weedless part of the Adriatic .-)

On my trailing log the "impulse" is half a turn of the impeller long, so if you can turn it slowly enough you can see the voltage go up and down (power on). I appreciate this is not so easy to do on a through-hull mounting without first removing the impeller.

With the impeller disconnected from the display, you could try checking resistance. This should normally be infinite, but dropping to zero once or twice per revolution of the impeller

Try cleaning the connection where the cable from the impellor connects to the back of the display unit.

The system works by very tiny currents of electricity so the slightest amount of corrosion or dirt in the connection will stop it working.

Always presuming of course that the impellor is still spinning.

I had a similar problem and tried everything without success. Eventually found it was caused by a slight nib of antifouling which had built up around the rim of the hull opening.
