Log Impeller through hull...

I am in the process of fitting a new log. This involves fitting a new through hull fitting into which the new impeller transducer fits.

Fortunately the new through hull is the same diameter as the old. The old one had been glassed in on the inside of the hull with epoxy filler of some sort. I chipped all this away with a chisel in order to get at the locking ring - when I did nothing would shift it. In the end I hammered a soft wood plug into the old through hull and successfully drilled it out with a hole saw from the outside. This worked a treat even if the plastic through hull did melt under the heat of the hole saw!

I cleaned the hole in the hull up and offered up the new through-hull fitting having applied Sikaflex on the inner edge of the flange and screwed it into place with the locking ring on the inside. A week later with the Sikaflex on the outside having cured, I unscrewed the locking ring on the inside of the hull, applied Sikaflex all round the through-hull fitting where it emerges on the inside of the boat and then screwed the locking ring down into the Sikaflex and have done it up hand tight and ensured the sealant is coming out all round the locking ring.

Question. Having done all the above, do I need to build up epoxy filler all round the fitting and its locking ring? What does the panel think?

TIA

Ed

Hi

You seem to have done it text book style. Exactly how I do it but I do it all in one go. Wait for a couple of days then tighten a bit more. Fitted loads and never had a problem, fitted one yesterday as chance has it (Nasa Clipper Duet) with a 42mm hole. Seems perfect to me.

Hi . If it's a Nasa fitting I would strongly recomend that you bond in the fitting internally. I had the external flange detach from the barrel of the fitting which left only the adhesion of the Sikaflex between me & Davey Jones. When I told NASA they seemed unconcerned & said that it often happens.
Bond it in & sleep soundly.

Any exposed glass inside the hole must be sealed to prevent water entering. 2 or 3 coats of epoxy resin will provide good protection

Nasa recommend building up inside with GRP, making a mound over the securing nut. Leaving 20 mm of thread clear when measuring from top.
