I keep seeing bits on here. About the new law about needing to keep a log book from July. Thought I would have seen loads of information about it in marinas or harbour office. But no, nothing. We had a laugh about it on here a few weeks ago. But did not get down to what its all about. What does it do. What help is it to anyone. What information do they want and who are "They". Can we get away with. "Gone out, came back" Or has it to be in great detail with note about changing course for lobster pot. Are you all going to do it or just ignore it? What are the implications or fines?

I think that as it stands if your boat is Lloyds part one you must keep a log, and at present for SSR boats it is optional, but the powers that be are advising that 'in any difficulties' [?] keeping a log would be advisable......UK unregistered boats....who knows

Next, the Solas V regulations: under which, among other things, all pleasure boat skippers will be legally required to make a passage plan whenever going to sea. There is nothing we can do about this: astonishingly, the new rules come into force on July 1, courtesy of the International Maritime Organisation, an agency of the United Nations based in London, with the help of our own Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The RYA seems to have been consulted almost as an afterthought.

Like most petty bureaucracy, it’s silly, infuriating, probably unworkable – and invests power in the hands of those least qualified to wield it. You can read more about developments on p10.

But what is a "Passage plan" when related to motor boaties. I never have much of a plan, even if going quite a long way. Nearly never look at a chart, let alone do any navigating. Not because I cant but because I've been everywhere within 100 miles, umpteen times. so can remember. Anyway its nearly always. Oh look theres a big ship there. Lets have a look at it. Then poodle over to Cawsands. Then decide its to bumpy to bother dropping the anchor. So then just bomb round to Fowey. But on the way the sun comes out so stop at Looe for abit. How do you make a plan for that.

Should we not start with whats a passage?

Will we have to notify Falmouth CG as we leave Black Rock for a sail round the bay, and log in on return?.

What happens Falmouth Week for the boats racing in the bay, do they need a Passage Plan?

What do you do if a raggy gets in the way. Do I send Tutts down to plot a new course and make a plan before I can alter course. Is it ok to alter course from the plan anyway or do we have to stick to it and just ram him!!
All sounds a bit iffy. But why cant some one give me a propper answer. What the hell is a passage plan?? What happens if I dont have one, or dont stick to it. How does it help if I'm sinking. Or lost. Who's going to read it, if it sinks with me? Is a little man going to come round and check that I've got one?

Well must admit that most of the time the plan is to ram the yachtie. but would have Thought government had plans to miss them. Maybe wrong. Just want to know what this new rule is. Then can apply it or not bother.

I've sorted it!

The motorboater's issue there passage plan, this is passed to the yacht clubs, thus allowing yachts to make there pssage plan so that they can tack in front of the motorboater's.


Do think it will take the spontaneity out of life though!!!!!!!!!!

I know what a passage plan is yer daft hapeth. But only as it applies to me. Just get Tutts to right down where we are, every half hour or so. Just incase the GPS/Auto pilot goes wonky. But only do that if going to Jersey or some place across a lot of sea and might get lost. Dont do it for hopping round the coast for how ever many miles. Cos I know where I am. Other than that. All the info is on a screen, with no printer.
I want to know what Who ever they are. Expect and why.

Are we supposed to send/give a copy of our plan to the coastguard, harbourmaster, insurance broker or nearest skipper or can we just make it up after the trip?

I still don't understand what to do if her indoors decides that you should go in a different direction 'cos it looks smoother over there!

1. From... To... Distance... (all approx)

2. Charts Required for passage (corrected to...)

3. Times of HW for reference port for Tidal Stream Atlas

4. Notes from Sailing directions

5. Tidal curves - to calculate Tidal gates, heights over Bars etc.

6. Open sea passages
From, To, Course to make good, distance etc.

7. harbours of refuge in case of adverse weather conditions

8. Dangers en Route

9. Visual aids, Radio Beacons (?)

10. Shipping Forecast.


I don't know how much of this is legal as of 1st July, but its a start. There was some waffle about crew abilities being included; my dog can undo bowlines, but can't tie them yet...

I notice that there is not much output from the boating magazines regarding this - apart from the "Poppycock" of course...

All fair enough, but we tend to go by the HLB approach, so plans can change or adapt at any time. The point is, who actually regulates this, who is able to ask to see your passage plan, and what happens if it bears no relation at all to what you started off with?
 
How about YBW GIVING AWAY a laminated sheet and suitable pen (and waterproof pouch to put it all in) showing the required information for pleasure craft with blank spaces for us to fill in as appropriate. Or, just publish one on their web site so we can print it off and photo copy?
