On my boat I have a Lofrans Royal manual windlass.

I did not find any oil inside.

Is it normal or should it be lubricated ? Which oil and which quantity ?

Thanks for any help.

I have just had one of these fitted, and there is a label on the top which says "do not oil" or some such (not on boat at present so relying on memory). Mine came from ECS, who I believe are the UK distributors, and judging by their friendliness at the last boat show, they are probably worth a quick call.

You probably have your answer by now but I'll tell you my experience anyway.
I bought a Sadler 29 early this year which had a Lofrans Royal. Like you I thought it must need lubrication and I undid the big bolt on the top to have a look. Big mistake! The thread in the main casing is very fine and fragile and the bolt, which has a long shaft on it is a B***** to get started in the thread again.

The advice I got from the importers was to simply dismantle the star wheel and clutch and gypsy, wash it with fresh water, clean off any corrosion, spray with WD40 reassemble and then leave it alone. It works for me!
