Lofrans Royal Windlass - Help Required

I've just purchased a Lofrans Royal Manual Windlass. No matter how tight you turn the wing-nut the clutch on the gypsy just slips and will not pull up the chain.

Has anyone else had the problem or got any bright ideas?

As I remember it is a cone with an inverted cone pushed on by the 'wing' nut - nut with spokes sticking out?

Either the back cone is missing the the hollow 'pin' which holds it firm to the shaft - It is a sort of short bent round bit which you have to hammer in maybe using the end of a hex or a thing for tapping out bolts.
OR there is grease between the two cones and they are slipping.

I would strip down that side of the windlass and clean it up and see if the 'fixing' pin is missing...

Wrong cone for the right gypsy or right cone for the wrong gypsy. Had the same problem. They always seem to mix them up. Gypsies for different chain size need different cones.
 
When I had one it did not have to be very tight to hold... Just a little pressure or it became really difficult to release....

I would however always use a snubber so there was no weight on the windlass except for setting and removing snubber or when adjusting chain length. I think you should always use a snubber except when parking for short periods...
