I'm looking to buy a Lofrans Royal windlass and I'm wondering if I would be able to keep my existing 40 metres of 8mm chain, which is nearly new - good quality but not calibrated so far as I know. I've heard that Lofrans specify calibrated chain but that in practice it may not be essential?

Jim,

I have a Lofrans windlass and had hell's own trouble with the chain jumping over the spigot wheel. In the end I had to bin all the chain and buy all new calibrated lofrans chain. I think if you buy calibrated chain which is not Lofrans own you will have problems - it has to be Lofrans chain. Seems mad I know but it was the only solution that I found to make it work correctly. It runs perfectly now - after a few hundred quid spent!

Mine works OK with my old uncalibrated chain.

I would guess that there is a risk that one or more links might cause a problem, so it would be worth a test.

I believe Lofrans 8mm chain is 8 x 24 x 26 DIN766. In other words, 8mm x 24mm pitch (the length of the hole in the link) x 26mm overall width.

I don't agree with that. I recently bought calibrated chain from Griff Chain Ltd and it works perfectly with my Lofrans Royal.

Wrong wrong wrong.

As long as you use a calibrated chain you will be fine. Lofrans don't make chain just as Lewmar doesn't. Both 'promote' using 'their' chain which is purely an Up Sell.

Both Lofrans and Lewmar use chain made by the same outfit in Italy. You can buy this very same chain from a crowd call EyeCo in Ipswitch (could be dodgy spelling) or from a crowd in NZ i.e me. Obviously there is many others as well.

I don't know the EyeCo crowd apart from knowing we share the same supplier.

I'm sure this is EyeCo website purely for your FYI.
