Hi everyone,

I have a Lofrans Panther (1989) windless with 8mm gypsy. I want to buy new chain and change to 10mm. I can buy a new gypsy that fits the Kobra/Cayman/Tigres/Royal. I am assuming this would also fit the Panther ? Does anyone know. I think the Panther is very similar to the Kobra but maybe they changed the gypsy in the new models so it will not fit and I am stuck.

Thank you,
Alan

I would ask Lofrans.

Most windlass makers have a spread sheet of gypsies vs windlass - and you will be amazed at the number of gypsies that each produce. They are sometimes on the website, but need a bit of searching. I don't have one for Lofrans that includes a Panther :( . The gypsies fit different sized shafts, have different keys etc - so I would assume nothing - ask the manufacturer.

If you are to buy new chain, why do you want to go bigger?!, then the load on the windlass, and power used, will increase. The chain will take up more room in your locker - and obviously be heavier.

Quite often you can find gypsies in second hand marine stores or boat jumbles. You might also find an old windlass the purchase of which, including the gyspy, is much cheaper than a new gypsy. Ask whoever fits windlass in you boatyard - they might have a pile of old pieces.
