Lofrans Cayman Gearbox Strip

Ean_p, thanks for posting the link. I was just going to ask for that since I realised that I need not sweat over the bearing removal as it is the casing which I am replacing and so will just slip in a new bearing. From what you have written, that sounds like a task not without risk.
The whole reason for this is that the mounting studs pulled out of the casing due to corrosion. The replacement will be mounted a little differently on a chopping board and will be dismounted at the end of the season. Lots of Duralac will be used on the studs.

Did you consider Helicoils on the original casting?

When the casting get eaten away you have no meat to drill for a heĺìcoil ,
In some cases it totally gone .
Best advise to anyone with theses windlass is bed it on top of something like a plastic bread board ,use plenty of Duralac and remove it each year and give it a good clean.
Also wash in clean water offen .

I briefly considered helicoils but with the casing so corroded I reckoned there would not be sufficient good metal. When the studs pulled out, one corner of the casing was pulled of.
I am wondering, for the future, if the Tigres casing would not be better with exposed bolts making it stronger and less likely to have stainless/aluminium joint corrosion. I need to compare the part numbers and see how many of the parts are the same.
