We have purchased a secondhand boat which has a Cayman 88 windlass. We are in the process of undertaking our first programme of maintenance and wish to service the windlass. We have read the manual and understand that we need to undo the wingnut from the gypsy to remove and clean some of the inner parts. Unfortunately it may not have been serviced for some time and is quite stiff even when using the emergency handle to add leverage. Although this may be a very basic question, we would like to know whether we should be turning the wing nut clockwise or anti-clockwise in order to undo it. The manual does not give us this information and naturally we do not wish to damage the windlass. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
