I have a Lofran Electric windlass. Unfortunately no manual. Does anyone know if I can put diesel engine oil in or does it have to be something special? Also, is it supposed to be filled to the red line or is the red line a minimum and do you fill to the height of the glass window?
Answers much appreciated.

I defer to axshul users/owners of this unit. .... but if none forthcoming....there are no fast-moving parts, so really any old oil will do - tho i wd put in thickerish gear oil of some description. Dunno that model, but exceess will get chucked out the bearings. Gearboxes tend to fill to below the line of the main shaftsm any more will just ooze out or in extremis may cause overloads/hydrualic forces to be developed unnecesarily - so don't overfill . If there's red line around that area, i wd fill to just above that - the thing won't use/burn any like an engine does.

I have a Lofrans Airon manual in front of me, which calls for SAE 90 for the gearbox:

if you follow the link to the download page, you can find anything special about your specific windlass
