we have two bialetti coffee makers, the alluminium ones, two halves that screw together.

the smaller one is brilliant.

the bigger one has a tread that gets very stiff / locks when it meets the seal. it screws in easily all the way without the seal.

i've send it back, 2x !, they claim there is nothing wrong with it :-(
apart from leaking coffee all over the stove, it works fine !

any suggestions as to how to free the thread up, or put it in the wheelie and have a G&T ?

Someone bought me one of those. Pain in the bum. Throw it away and buy a nice Cafetiere filter thing. Personally I can't be arsed with anything that difficult. Instant coffee works for me and nothing to clean afterwards.. I do have a Cafetiere for special occasions though when at anchor in the evening somewhere where I can wash it in a bucket and throw grouts overboard.

Sounds like a faulty batch. It is Italian after all...

Is the top surface of the bottom half smooth and flat? It could be the casting is naff and puckering up the rubber seal. The Alu is not anodised so you can file it if need be.

I bought a bigger one for the boat just before xmas and was shocked at the UK price. Cheap as chips in France or Italy.

Is the seal the right size? I have several, including a 2-cup model, but when I needed new seals I was told 'they don't make a 2-cup model' so brought seals for a 3-cup, which looked ok but wouldn't close properly.
1 cup seal fits though. Also, if you have friends abroad it would be just as cheap to get them to buy you a new one and post it to you.

As for getting rid of it and getting a cafatierre, you may as well start drinking Mellow Birds, IMHO! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now a nice little Gaggia, that would be progress, but may require an upgrade in boat...
