Hi - im new to boat ownership, having recently bought a Halcyon 23, so any advice ongood web sites or essential reading all welcome. However I do have a specfic question - the locker lids on my halcyon are poor fitting GRP. Looking at pictures on the web the originals would have been wood. Any idea how i can replace the GRP ones.

I also want to repaint the topsides/decking - any advice on paints/procedures welcome

Other jobs on the list are repairing/raplacing the leaking portholes, serviceing the engine, fitting a log, fitting a wind direction indicator and fitting the compass. Its going to be a long winter !!!.

The locker lids on my Halcyon 27 are about 3/4" solid teak....I assume the Halcyon 23 was originally similar. Should be a straight forward DIY job to get some Iroko strips about 6" wide and construct something suitable. Don't be tempted to use marine ply...solid Iroko is not that expensive (about 1/3rd the cost of teak if I remember correctly). Also drop an e-mail to Mark Johnson on the class association web site...he might have some plans in the archive.

What make of engine?
Painting - I did mine and as usual the trick is preparation. Say 180 grit or finer wet/dry used wet with a bit of detergent. That should smooth surface and key it and also remove any greases. You next decision is 2 pot or 1 pot polyurethane - do a search on this site and you'll find plenty of conflicting opinions as usual. Make your own mind up but I used 1 pot cos my boats a battered classic. Some people swear by Woolworths non drip gloss.
Presumable you will use non slip deck paint. All the manufacturers do one.
They windows. I changed mine to perspex through bolted onto a neoprene gasket with sealant to make sure. Not a slinky as the originals but leakproof, much safer.
I keep reminding myself that I've got an old boat that was cheap to buy, is now pretty sound but not to waste either time or money on non essentials.
Good luck...spuddy

Many thanks for all the advice

I have applied to join the OYCOA so will ask there for more detail.

Are the locker lids flush with the surrounding GRP or do they sit proud - any chance of a picture (paints a thousand words)

Out of interest what is Iroko ??

Re the painting job - the halcyon has non slip pads "built into" the the grp so i was going to go for a standard paint - do i need to reconsider ?

Sorry re multiple questions - next time i'll raise one post per query (still very new to forums)

My locker lids are flush with the surrounding GRP, but the "23" might be different to the "27"...try to see some others or get some online photos. Iroko is a wood very similar to teak in characteristics but more easily available and cheaper. Not sure where you are based, but Robbins in Bristol sell it (got a big chunk for a new mast step last year). Can't comment on the paint issues...I also have non-slip moulded-in and painting would be the last resort. Fortunately the 1969 GRP is still looking very good. Try a good clean first.

Seeing your location, it may help that there's a nice Halcyon 23 at Eastbourne Marina that has wooden cockpit locker lids and I think from memory (I popped in there 3 weeks ago and moored next to him) he had also got a painted deck. To find it, imagine you are coming through the right hand lock, the Halcyon is at the far end of the pontoon that runs along your starboard side for about 100m. The owner is a real gent, gave me a lift to the train station when I was stranded!
