The staff at our new home marina have warned us that visiting yachties have a habit of plugging into any available shore power meter and leaving the owner (us) to pay the bill. Without getting into the complications of (a) how this happens, and (b) other people's scruples, does anyone know of a technique or device that can be fitted to the standard 16 amp blue 3-pin socket that is lockable to prevent this practice?

The device has to be something to prevent people from plugging into the socket, so the bike lock idea won't work.

From here

Use it so that the switch can still be used for safety.

I have some useful gadgets (for sale) that do precisely the opposite of what you want /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I would say Thank You Marina ....... Why ? Even my ex marina I just left end of 2006, who are famous for being on the economy side of things fitted locking sockets. Preventing unauthorised use.

But yes you should be able to sort something ... even if only a wire tight fitted round plug and a padlock locking it to the socket carrier ?

The 16 amp outlets installed in our marina by a south of the border company have wee lugs for padlocks on the covers.....Mind you it is surprising how many friendly yachtsmen leave them unlocked when we are in dire need and the marina office is closed so can t buy a top up card .

Get a spare plug, remove the innards. Drill through the casing with a 7 mm drill bit. Pass a length of s/s rigging wire through the hole. get the chandler to crimp eyes in the ends, making the length 'just' long enough to go round the power pole and lock with a padlock.

Even a half hearted attempt at security will make the opportunistic power thief plug into someone elses socket.

Complain to the marina, they are the ones allowing your powe to be stolen!

Install a meter in your shore power cable and only pay for what went up your cable!

Alternatively provide your own lockable socket or locking isolator and agree with the marina to get it installed.

Arrangements at our club (Royal Northumberland Yacht Club
RNYC_logo.gif
) are card topped up metering.

It means that anything left on the meter in your absence is possibly used by others but allows the club to accommodate visitors on any empty pontoon.

The cards are £1 each so the loss is somewhat limited.

Visitors are welcomed
