Lock Keepers? Heybridge Basin Troll\'s

Mmmmmm

Is the position of Lock Keeper a service industry position?

Does the position mean, and I am only guessing here, that when the tide is at an accessable height, no matter what the time is the 'Lock Keepers' job is to operate the gates and route the tidal flow?

The reason I ask is this:

The River Blackwater, Heybridge Basin, The lock keeper, or should I say his...................................erm.....erm...Woman who wears his ring!!!!!

I was there in the canal this weekend, and wow! lovely place, but....Hello..... Who wears the trouser's?

The Lock Keeper, I think his name was Charles, or Clive or something, I was party to a conversation with regards to the evening locking in, and I understand that the little lady refused to let an evening lock happen!!!!!!!!!!

Can you believe that? They apparently require 48 hours notice to lock! What does Essex Water Ways think of that?

If the lock keepers wages were governed by piece work, and he was paid per locking or how many vessels he had coming in and out, they would be poor people.

I have never met a ruder, less friendly lock keeper in all my life. He shouted at visitors, had no people skills to endure return visits, and that lady if it was a man she would have gone for a swim.

I can understand why CBN company lost money, I and my friends on their yacht will not be visiting them by boat again.

The venue was fab, is fab! I went there because of an earlier post by PVR, and the info a Tillergirl had given. He spoke the truth, but omitted the Troll in residence!!!

Come on EWW, wake up, you have a little gem of a place there and it is being let down by rude unfriendly staff, or spouses of staff.

Enough said!!!

PS. I also, as a visiting Yachtie took a walk and got kicked off a pontoon by a grey haired old lady who was a member of some HCBS or something. ITs private for members only!!!!

Bad visit to a lovely place let down by grumpy people. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Many moons ago, having traversed the dreaded Wallet in a Bradwell 18, complete with one SWMBO, 2 anklebiters & large Labrador, arrived at Aldeboro S.C from the Colne with a broken outboard (penta 5). Hon Sec insisted we use the club workshop to repair said beast, and use Club facilities for family, 1) earnt my everlasting thanks!
2) left a soft spot forA.S.C.
3) Subsequent visits have only reinforced original thoughts.
However, have to agree with comments re. Heybridge, and will never bother to return, whilst present incumbent running things.

Re: Lock Keepers? Heybridge Basin Troll\'s

I have known the lock keeper, Colin, at Heybridge for many years (22). He is one of the friendliest and helpfull people I have and still do have the pleasure of knowing. Like all things this is my opinion, I would suggest others make there own opinion when meeting him rather than relying on others.

As always a person with a gripe is a person who didn't get what THEY wanted.

regards

Re: Lock Keepers? Heybridge Basin Troll\'s

Sorry to hear that you didn't have a good visit. I recommended Heybridge Basin to another forum user recently as I have visited several times in the last 5 years and have never had anything other than superb service from Colin, even when I turned up without having booked on the Basin regatta weekend - Sharing the lock with some very big bowsprits was interesting!

As a matter of interest what time was the evening tide that they would not lock out on?

Re: Lock Keepers? Heybridge Basin Troll\'s

You are obviously from the same ilk as the said Troll.

If I am not the only one with whom 'Colin' has been rude, how can you say that?

Were you one of the HBSC people trying to keep the new pontoon to yourself?

Like I said earlier, lovely place let down by RUDE people, if you wish to join those making the list, please go ahead.

I don't believe in the aledged 22 years of knowing this man he has never upset you!

I went to Heybridge Basin with my parents years ago, and the lock keeper George was a lovely lovely man, nothing was to much trouble, that was 20 years ago and people still speak of him fondly. Kind of throws your 22 years of Colin being the lock keeper into the lock eh? I still have the photo's George took of us in the lock.

My point, I had made was, IS THIS A SERVICE INDUSTRY, should the lock be opened when tide is up or when the lock keepers wife decides that her husband is allowed too do it?

Colin WAS the man on duty, along with a dear old man called, Nigel. and the wife had a horrible dog, a bearded collie with out any control over it, jumping up at people and dirtying everything!!!

I'll say again, lovely place shame about some of the staff!

My gripe is, THE WIFE RUNS THE LOCKING TIMES???????????

Elenya

You can speak of this man from all the way in NZ

Would I be correct in saying then, that when you do see this man, it's with a holiday air about it, time off from work? But you feel the need to question me and his atitude to his customers whilst carrying out his DUTY, read the thread again my dear.

You are very interesting. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Reagards to you

Re: Lock Keepers? Heybridge Basin Troll\'s

I seem to remember from when we spent a couple of winters in the basin in the early 90's that Colin's wife was recovering from a brain tumour, that might account for the mood swings and her infamous temper

Re: Lock Keepers? Heybridge Basin Troll\'s

Ah, that would be the fair Sandra, then (universally known as The Poison Dwarf).

I heard that she succumbed to the tumour a few years ago.

Colin Edmond always was a very helpful bloke, but it sounds like the poor chap has got himself Poison Dwarf 2....... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: Lock Keepers? Heybridge Basin Troll\'s

Last Wednesday, 16th August, high tide at Maldon 0630. After spending Tuesday night at Maldon I thought to go into Heybridge Basin for twenty four hours. "We aren't opening the lock tomorrow morning, only for the evening tide," I was told when I telephoned the night before. No reason given. Take it or leave it. Is it unreasonable to expect a man in a full time post to operate split shifts to enable two lock operations within daylight hours?

Re: Lock Keepers? Heybridge Basin Troll\'s

Hello Bluechip

Just to help you out on this, Sandy sadly died I believe only last year. A charachter she was!

Re: Lock Keepers? Heybridge Basin Troll\'s

Colin is always very welcoming, but can get a bit stressed out at the sometimes very busy lockouts. Since the demise of the canal company, and take over by the IWA, he's one of the few employees left. I think he does a brilliant job, helped by equally very helpful wife and the team of regular helpers.

Am now at Tollesbury, and will probally wander up there later in the week, so hope to be in the Jolly Sailor soon!
