BBC WEBSITE STORY
The decision from Lord Smith following the pre Xmas delegation from Tug(N) has not yet appeared on the ATYC website but I believe the EA Board have agreed to continue with the letting programme but with just 5 lock houses as a 'pilot' scheme which will be reviewed by a steering committee (participants undefined) over the next twelve months. Grafton and SUnbury are already tenanted and Chertsey is under offer.

The BBC quote may be incorrect but the rent figures do not stack up. Cleeve is mentioned as being in the market for £1,200 per month but this asking price was reduced to £995 some weeks ago and it is still being advertised. Even if eventually let at that price it will only generate less than £12k per annum GROSS. This website says "Sorry, this property is no longer available" but does not state that it has actually been let.By saving the £32,000 cost of a keeper at each lock and by generating an average of £14,000 of income, the agency hopes to raise about £230,000 a year from renting out five properties.
