BBC WEBSITE STORY

The decision from Lord Smith following the pre Xmas delegation from Tug(N) has not yet appeared on the ATYC website but I believe the EA Board have agreed to continue with the letting programme but with just 5 lock houses as a 'pilot' scheme which will be reviewed by a steering committee (participants undefined) over the next twelve months. Grafton and SUnbury are already tenanted and Chertsey is under offer.

By saving the £32,000 cost of a keeper at each lock and by generating an average of £14,000 of income, the agency hopes to raise about £230,000 a year from renting out five properties.
The BBC quote may be incorrect but the rent figures do not stack up. Cleeve is mentioned as being in the market for £1,200 per month but this asking price was reduced to £995 some weeks ago and it is still being advertised. Even if eventually let at that price it will only generate less than £12k per annum GROSS. This website says "Sorry, this property is no longer available" but does not state that it has actually been let.

Speaking to a relief locky at Goring recently and his take was they hadn`t agreed access from the local farmer yet for Cleeve and as for Whitchurch???...3 gates from the main road for cleve the first of which has to be locked as i understand it and another of the access for EA staff only type arangements,So regardless of figures adding up there are a few other things to be sorted first i would imagine Steve
