Lock Houses and Lock Keeper Jobs *DELETED*

Re: Lock Houses and Lock Keeper Jobs

Seems like a good idea for us all to log the availability of lock staff as we travel up and down.
An interim report halfway through the season will be welcomed by Eileen McKeever I'm sure.
It's only the lockkeepers who can tell us the real impact on them, it may be that the proposed houses really are surplus and a cost they/we could do without. Or, one or two of them could be causing real problems to a family.

Re: Lock Houses and Lock Keeper Jobs

That's a good idea to keep a log running, very easy to do and important to back up an argument with some simple facts. This is such a massive step backwards after all the work that has gone on with new layby's and improved lock facilities. However given what we know now, with the chaos that will ensue with reduced lock keeper availability, then those extra layby's will definitely be needed! If we are getting a reduced service and paying increased charges, then we should be able to claim a proportion of our license fee back!

That reminded me, I heard a rumour when last out and about on the river that gold license holders are going to get a refund of part of their license fee due to not being able to use the river during the floods...

If it is true and gold license (i.e. visitors) are getting a partial refund, then I'm sure that residents (i.e. EA river license holders) should also get a refund.

Anyone heard about this?

Darren.

Re: Lock Houses and Lock Keeper Jobs

Ah but if you read their Survey on Costs Here - Summary of Results , the customers who rate EA the highest are.......you guessed it Narrowboats.

So they dont want to hack off the only folks who like them do they?

Re: Lock Houses and Lock Keeper Jobs

I hadn't heard anything about gold licence holders but certainly those on visitor licenses had them extended for the amount of time they were immobilised.

Re: Lock Houses and Lock Keeper Jobs

Not true. Gold visitors have annual licences from BW and are not getting any refunds (not from us anyway) because of the flooding.

One might say that's only to be expected. After all, they have to work their own locks on the canal system so the manned locks routine on the Thames must be very pleasant for them.

I am not an expert about shoals or benson - I have asked the team leader but not heard back yet - I will let you know when I do. They work funny days so are not always around mid week. Sorry - not forgotten you.

They were given a choice of an extension or refund.

Thank you angelaq for a quick response, guess my source must have been mistaken - I did say it was only a rumour.

They are already this year have difficulty recruiting summer staff. Nobody wants to apply. But then I am not surprised on the salary they are offering.

Really? My daughter tried to apply recently, as she finishes Uni this year, and was sent a reply saying "Sorry .. too late!".

Re: Lock Houses and Lock Keeper Jobs

Thats because they tried Wimmin lockkeepers, and they spent all their working day chatting on the mobile phone....
