I just remembered that D3B asked me about the locks at Eastbourne whilst we were chatting last weekend. I've found a photo of Chellers in the lock and you can just about see that the floating pontoons rise about 4' above the water and have wooden cladding. Most of the cleats have a short length of mooring line attached. Both locks are virtually the same and change round every half hour (unless it's changed since last year!)
