Local yard gets it sorted

We've had endless grief with our stern gland, repacked twice by our friends at Fox's at some considerable expense and leaking all this season like a leaky stern gland thingy. Came back to Granary in Woodbridge with the auto bilge pump kicking in every 20 minutes. I went and found Simon and said we couldn't leave the boat with such a bad leak. He said it would have to wait a day as he'd put his back out. Next morning he came down and assessed the problem, tutted and sucked his teeth. Came back later with a bunch of tools and got to work. Turns out the Fox's packing was OK but they hadn't aligned the cap correctly and it needed an extra line of packing. An hour later the job was done, the bilge dry and no leak for the first time in two years.

Why am I saying all this now? The bill came on Saturday for the work.

On our previous boat, we had a similar problem.
Turns out when the packing had been put in, the cuts of each piece lined up so the water came in.
A replacement with packing stacked with the cuts at 90 degrees to the previous one sorted it out.
It's amazing how small things make a big difference.

staggering the cuts is the correct method & should be best practice
 
The cut in the bill was pretty staggering and its smallness made a big difference :)

I love Fox's and had some good work done but there are times when a yard with two blokes and 60 customers is a lot better than 20 staff and a several hundred customers.

There's a couple of chapters in one of my favourite books (S.O.D.S Law of the Sea) that cover this off to a T....
