We are based in Cagliari for the next month or so. I am trying to understand the wind patterns and in particular the effect of the land mass on sea/land breezes. This, especialy, because most of our sailing will be day trips around the coast in the proximity of Cagliari.
There are quite a few technical papers dealing with this which I find interesting but a bit too detailed for my aging brain!! What I have read, though, does suggest that there are considerable variations in patterns right around Sardinia.
Cagliari seems to be affected by being in a gap between mountains to the east and west which help funnel any NW wind, on top of this there is the usual sea/land effect due to the temperature differential.
When we get the ‘local’ meteo I guess the wind strengths and directions relate to the general sea area and that one would have to ‘model’ the local effect of the land mass onto the top of this? As an example if there is a wind forcast of say 10 kn NW then we can assume that this may be increased by the funnel effect and then added to or reduced by the sea/land breeze effect. This may account for the fact that the wind in Cagliari never seems to agree with the forcast!

Easy.

Send a PM to MapisM. He keeps in boat in those parts. Top bloke - I am sure he will do all he can to assist. PS - his English is first class, so no communication problems. :D
