My daughter is thinking of buying a LM27 "Rnysa" presently at Brighton Marina, without viewing the boat (I know). It would be really helpful If anyone there knows the boat or any backstory about it. The boat looks quite tidy on the Boatshed photos but appears to have a some osmosis and maybe has had a bang on the side. Any info would be helpful to help her avoid a big mistake perhaps or alternatively get a boat for not a lot of money!

What sort of sailing does your daughter intend to do with this boat - long passages, coastal, or maybe just as a houseboat?

They are asking £9,950 for her.

LM 27 for sale UK, LM boats for sale, LM used boat sales, LM Sailing Yachts For Sale 1982 LM 27 - Apollo Duck

The broker sounds quite amazed, such that they had to issue this statement -
"This example has been used as a liveaboard for the last five years in London and she came to Brighton from London under her own steam and sail with, no issues. "

Here is her advert with Boatshed -
LM 27 Mark II For Sale, 8.35m, 1982

Here is a link to a video of the hull bottom with the vessel sitting in slings -

I was wondering if maybe the name had been changed - Boatshed are claiming that this is the boat, but I guess it is very likely that they made an error (they went to film the wrong boat?).
Strange that they haven't noticed yet...... :)

That video is over 6 months old...

I always liked the LM27 but was put off some years ago whilst in Ramsgate marina when I watched one trying to reverse into a berth. No idea whether the skipper was experienced but it did not want to go in reverse - just went all over the place whatever he did, being fended off by crews on other boats. Just my view and opinion at the time - I've never sailed one.

Being a long keeler they are not particularly handy in reverse, but not too bad. Unlike most long keelers the rudder is separate from the keel and has no prop cut-out, and is therefore more effective in reverse. (Even more effective if you extend the rudder as a few have done.)

Just needs a bit of practice and understanding of the different forces - wind, current, prop walk, etc. - acting on the boat and how much steerage you get in reverse at different speeds, and in and out of gear.

I haven't hit anything yet! I've also reversed my LM27 in a straight line at tickover speed down a particularly long 'alley' between pontoons in a marina, albeit in calm conditions. All that said, I've now fitted a bow thruster (but yet to try it out), in part because I'm often single-handed and have ambitions to visit some challengingly tight spots.

P.S. If the OP has any particular questions about LM27s in general, I'd be happy to help. (I don't know the particular boat, and certainly wouldn't recommend buying any boat unseen.)

I think you will find it is the same boat. Looking at the photos on Apollo Duck, the boat has RNSA in rather large letters on the stern

It looks like the blue stripe has been painted then to obliterate the name "Cheerio". So, it has galloping osmosis amongst other issues. I wouldn't buy it unseen.

Don't think the boat's name is Rynsa. The lettering on the stern stands for Royal Naval Sailing Association (RNSA)

As already noted seems to have bad blisters under Coppercoat. Not for the faint hearted as difficult to patch and expensive to rectify properly. Lot of good gear though, so if you aren't bothered about the blisters it is still very usable.

Unfortunately, mine's out of the water at present so I can't help.

I suggest you post a request on the LM forum linked below. It would be useful to also indicate where you're based.

Good luck with your search.
