1964: Roach, yes. Branklet, yes. Crouch, no. Both are listed as being owned by Blackwater Yacht Charters. Interestingly, Roach is listed as being built in 1953, Branklet in 1952.
Many many thanks to everybody that got up to look in their bookshelves!
1952 for Branklet and 1953 for Roach would make sense as I know her sail number is S1 and mine is S2. I have to say I was always very unsure of her age, and the 1948 comes from the original plans that Edward Dallimore, Norman's Son, gave me. As I restored to the original plans I kept to her "conception" dates till I could work out her exact history.
If you prefer, but I am not embarrassed by the fact there was not enough quality wood to make her immediately after the war, which is a common reason late 40's yachts were made in the early 50's - it just adds to her history...
No, I didnt - but thought it worth explaining her delay in being built. Don't worry I am not piqued.
There is nice article a Francis Cooke's 1948 edition of cruising hints suggesting that three men can buy a third for £150 each!
Her raised topsides concept, again, much reflects a the value-for-money design. Most people think this a Rossiter's innovation, but infact, Harrison Butler started it with his Z4 tonners.
In my range of Lloyds Registers, it's not in the 56', but the next ones I have she is, 59', 61', 64', & 66'. My next one is 68', and she's not in there.
All say built 53'.
First three note owners as Blackwater Charter Company Ltd. 66' has her owned by M D Clarke.
All have her home port as Maldon.
Sails are Taylor, (58' & 61')
Engine was first Coventry Victor 2 cyl, 6 BHP, dated 1950, then a Stuart Turner 1 cyl, 4 BHP, of 1962.
Looking at the back under designed by Dallimore, the 66' one has 7 boats 4 Ton (TM) designed only, so there could be a few of sister ships there. It would take a bit of time to note down the major dimensions and see if these other named boats were all the same & if built by same builder.
Athena very much alive. Flush-decked centre-boarder. http://athena1950.blogspot.com/
Branklet - was in Seedhouse's yard when I bough Roach. She was in a poor state then. Flush decked designed like Roach, but had a raised dog-house when I saw her. Larch and not mahogany. Bothing known since.
Doralind - currently for sale. Not to Dallimore's Roach design, although close. She has a raised midsips section and much deeper draft of 4' 6" www.doralind.co.uk
Kishti - no news apart from what I have heard here.
Lisbet - brilliant little yacht - centreboarder though, but apprently sials like witch.
Roach - well, what can I say.
Tarana - One of Dallimores first designs. Now restored and was the Excel Boat show in Jan. Gaff rig.
Looking at some earlier Registers, the only additional 4T (TM) I could find was Banrae.
But 68' onwards has "Heron" listed. Looking up "Heron" it said former name "Roach". Still owned by M D Clarke at Maldon. Same details in the 69' LR, but my next one 73' hasn't her listed.
Thanks - Well that would explain the dodgers with "Heron" on them when I bought her. Her name was Roach when I bought her, and now she has proper carved name plates to re-enforce that!
Something tells me that is not a Dallimore - its difficult to put my finger on it be she looks a bit too plump. I think she could be an early Blackwater Sloop though - and I forget who designed those.
Hi Guys
I sailed on Doralind from 1962 to 1972 with Monty her owner. We sailed out of Dixon Kerly 's yard in Maldon and we joined the Heybridge Basin yacht Assn. she was originally in painted black which we changed to red, with three quarter rig, and later extended to mast head rig. The 4hp Stuart Turner 2 bladed prop was way under powered and we couldnt punch the Blackwater ebb. In 64 during the world cup we fitted an old 8hp with 3 blader and she flew. With 4 ft draught she was as steady as a rock in a seaway and we cruised the east coast as far as the Deben then Dunkirk in 1965. Halcyon days. she was larch on oak. The fore deck was stepped down at the tabernacle unlike Roach. I hope she's still afloat.
I remember Frank Reevil had another Dalimore in Maldon but forget her name. Has anyone got any more history? I have a few pics if anyone needs them.
Cheers Pete
