On the return from a recent trip to Dublin for new year with fellow bonkers forumite EdBeynon, we came back through the newly opened Lleyn canal. It avoids the nasty perils of Bardsey Sound with a contrary tide. It is to be much recommended and the fee of 3 groats is well worth it...

The voyage out was made overnight on the 30th December, the 100 miles taking 10 hours arriving at 7am on the 31st. Surprisingly there were bags of visitors' berths available at Dun Loaghaire marina. I've never known it to be so empty. The night watchman greeted us in tradional Irish Gealic calling us 'fecking eejits'. Can anyone translate for us?

The return trip on the 1st was another 10 hours of wintry japes, including the passage of the aforemention Lleyn Canal.

Pleasing to see you utilise the land crossing of the Bardsey Island isthmus as well.

BTW, your splendid outbound sine wave shaped course is in marked contrast to the return trip; anything to do with Dublin's most famous export?

A sailing ship called 'The Seven Apostles' (well i think it was seven) took a similar course and was washed up in Hells Mouth. The signal received apparently said "Seven Apostles making water in Hells Mouth".

If you did a Handbrake Turn round Bardsey, you will need to look out for that mad policeman Mr Brunstrom. Its only a matter of time before there is a speed camera on top of the tower...hang on a mo..whats that flashing. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good to see it being used. It was getting a bit overgrown when I was at the Hell's Mouth end in July - picture taken from the towpath:

Yes, it was a hellava job steering in a straight line with barrels of the black stuff strapped to the tramp. Also in the Lleyn Canal, we nearly touched bottom a few times. That might have been unpleasant!
