I was considering putting my boat back into Liverpool marina for the winter and they said the lock gates were going to be out of action between the 1st November and the 31st March; i.e. once in - your locked in until the 31st March. Which is fine as I have quite a few jobs to do and will not usually be sailing past the 1st November.

But then my colleague asked how confident was I that presumably it's British Waterways ? will have their work completed on time !

Anybody know what BW's track record is, confidence in being completed on time or had similiar concerns raised with the Marina ?

Cheers, Andrew

There's definite rumours it might overrun by months. True or not I don't know, I suggest you find out what exactly is being done and speak to anyone who might know for certain.

Funny I’ve not heard them and I’m there 2-3 times a week.

My experience of BW on the inland waterways has generally been that "stoppages" were overestimated rather than underestimated. They do have a lot of experience with lock maintenance ! No guarantess tho' I guess

You are obviously not in touch with the rumour mill. The truth of the matter is I don't think anyone knows for sure, that's why I suggested asking around. The one thing to bear in mind is that if you ask anyone connected with the marina is that they obviously have a vested interest in keeping the boats there. The last time the lock gates were worked on, it all went pretty smoothly, but that was a smaller job.

If I was on a contract renewal I'd want to be driving a hard bargain but bear in mind you might be an armchair sailor next year.

I'm in close contact with all factual info. On site management could not give a monkies if the boats stay or go all they are interested in are the bar and function room! As March has been put in writing as the end date it leaves them open to compo claims, or the cost of craning over the wall if they overun, my solicitor informs me.
