Lively Lady rig question

I've recently been re-reading Sir Alec Rose's book and in the section which describes the rig it says that the aft lowers are attached to chain plates 4ft aft of the cap shroud chain plates. There is no mention of runners.

Does this mean that the aft lowers are far enough back to counter the forward pull of the inner forestay and Lively Lady doesn't need runners? Wouldn't the boom foul the aft lowers when running, or didn't he use the main for running, just the mizzen staysail?

If anyone's familiar with Lively Lady I would be very interested to know.

It is quite common on conservatively designed rigs to have 2 or even 3 sets of chain plates so that the lowers are forward and/or aft of the mast.
e.g. my rig. double spreaders, masthead
Cap shrouds: in-line with mast, go to masthead
Intermidiate Shrouds: in lne with mast, attach to mast just below the upper spreaders
Lowers: 2 sets of lowers on each side
Forward lowers: aprox 60cm in front of the chainplates for the caps/intermediates
Aft Lowers: approx 80cm behind the chainplates for the caps/intermediates
Why:
Forward and aft lowers stabilise the lower/mid section of the mast. When pounding into a head sea, the aft lowers take a huge amount of punishment, particularly if they are set up too slack.
Yes it restricts how far out the boom can go, but this is common in older boats.
A baby stay and checkstays can then stabilise the upper section of the mast if needed.
Get a copy of "My Lively Lady" by Alex Rose and there a re photos and diagrams that will explain his rig.
Go to the selden website and down load their "hints and advice" manual, andit will explain a lot for you.
