The thread on Destriero remembered me of another very peculiar boat which I saw on a magazine some years ago. Btw, I'm almost sure that it was a cover story, together with the FB 80' Record, another very interesting speedboat. And the magazine was possibly MBY or MBM, though I wouldn't bet my right hand on that.

Anyway. The boat I'm talking about was a sort of extreme opposite, if compared to FB '80 or Destriero: built to be self-sufficient enough to spend a whole winter in the arctic, with a round shaped hull which should have allowed her to self-lift above the ice undamaged, while it was forming around her.
And IIRC, the skipper was British.
But I didn't read any follow up of such remarkable project, and googling around a bit didn't help.
Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction?
The only other thing I seem to remember is that the hull was painted in yellow.....

Polar Bound!

She's the one, thanks.
Blimey, I googled around a bit, apparently that gentleman (David Scott Cowper) finally made it, and singlehanded. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
My utmost respect. The Blue Riband peeps are just sunday boaters in comparison...
I made a copy of this pic which I found, that'll be handy the next time swmbo will complain about onboard comfort!

Re: Polar Bound!

interesting

the FB 80 Record is now a production boat, produced by Otam...
a very interesting builder from Santa Margarita, who apart building and servicing boats in the 60s later on was the Europe service yard to Magnum in the 70, 80s and 90s before going again to produce boats
rumour is it they also used to complete some boats for the famous USA brand

Re: Polar Bound!

Geez, the world is small after all.
Did you have the opportunity to meet her skipper?
He must have quite some interesting stories to tell....

Re: Polar Bound!

There are a few at the marina that would be good to talk to, just we are never in the same place at the same time.
Not sure how long the boat is here for, might be for the winter or just a couple of months.
