Swinging mooring in the warmer 6 months, winter berth with mains power for the colder 6 months would be the absolute minimum that most would be able to cope with, especially while having to be in Plymouth for full time work. Ideally you could do with finding somewhere that unofficially tolerates living aboard, trouble is you can't really ask directly because those that do allow unofficial will likely say no if asked. I wouldn't buy a boat unless you have somewhere lined up where you know you'll be ok or you can afford the mooring fees as well as renting somewhere to live. I've lived on smaller but wouldn't go any smaller than late 20's feet for one tidy, organised person...

edit - if cheap accommodation is why you're doing this a van might well be easier, I did a year in one but it's also getting more difficult...

I had thought there was a large liveabord population on the Thames or other inland waterways - I’m sure I’ve seen a variety of boats around Kingston which seem to be used by students etc .

Not much good for somebody working in Plymouth!

Yes there is a big inland waterways liveaboard population, some residential some cruising but apart from the latter which if used properly is not suitable for somebody with a fixed place of work, there is not enough capacity to meet demands, particularly in urban areas in the south.

Hi there guys, so I'm currently buying my first boat and hope to live aboard full time, I currently live and work in Plymouth, my work is just off sutton quay so i was hoping to find somewhere to berth at sutton harbour but not only is it very expensive but they do not take live aboards, I'm going down to see the boat on saturday but i could really do with some pointers and general help. My parents used to live on their boat in bristol with no issues so why is it so difficult now to do? I'm thinking about a swinging mooring in torpoint and then buying a small tender to get to and from, any advice or help would be really appreciated. Thanks
Johnny
Try contacting Annual Moorings - Cattewater Harbour Commissioners they maybe able to help.

From what I've seen all of the Plymouth Marina's are dissuading liveaboards. I understand that PYH do allow them, but charge their visitor rate.
