What is the current situation about living-aboard at Port Edgar or other marinas in the forth area?

I'm familiar with the legal situation, but what is PE Marina's tolerance level??

Many thanks in advance :-)

where`s that, it sounds australian.

id ask the staff what the policy is!
liveaboards often say, i dont live on my boat, i just visit it often and stay a few days.
as long as your not running a company from your boat most marinas turn a blind eye.
if you must have a legal binding agreement then your on your own.

Ah! you'd never get a legally binding agreement or even an official statement from a marina. Most seem to turn a blind eye, but not all.

I am interested in what PE Marina's perception / tollerance is of live-aboard.

Port Edgar is NW of Edinburgh, almost directly under the Forth Road Bridge.

Not the marina you are interested in, but nobody lives aboard here, however, about 20 boats get their mail delivered to the office, strange that.

Know Port Edger well but not about its live-aboard policy - easy to find that out from the marina office.

However, it is not the prettiest of marinas and is very much a working set-up with very active sailing school, sea-scouts, several commercial operations etc. The only showers/toilet block I know off is pretty basic to say the least although there may be another somewhere else for berth-holders. The small cafe is also pretty basic. There is continuous noise from the Forth Bridge which as you quite rightly say is almost directly overhead.

The site can be VERY cold in winter with the wind coming off the North Sea and the East Coast "Harr" is a regular visitor.

On the plus side you have a Chandler; Boat Electronics; Sail-maker; Stainless Steel fabricator; marine woodworker etc on site.

Hope this helps.

We keep our boat at Port Edgar. Its the only marina on the Forth so you dont have much choice. It's quite (ie very) run down but there are plans to re-vamp it and build a new marina - I think the target date is 2028.

PM me and I will give you the low down - probably not a good idea to openly debate it in case the management get stroppy!

If you do bring the boat down, try and get a berth towards the shore end (south) of the marina to reduce the amount of swell that comes in when the tankers go past.

After all - you wouldnt expect the capital of Scotland to have a decent marina would you? Ducks from flailing Claymores - the Edinburghers prefer to bicker endlessly about what they might do in the future while their city decays and clogs with cars meanwhile the council approve shameful developments of no obvious architectural merit - see those by Forth Ports.

......er no!

I wish there were. They are very basic and certainly no better ones hidden away for our berth holders.

Good sailing there today though - round the cans race in 20-30knts of wind -great stuff ...we must be mad!

I've been there a couple of times when the weather driven swell/chop coming in made many of the pontoons practically untenable. Perhaps the locals could confirm if a regular occurence?

Pal of mine smashed his mast on an adjacent yacht in just such conditions. If you have a very small yacht and you only want to be lifted out when everybody else is and you dont want to stay very long and your draft is not to deep and you like to socialise in a 1930s scout hut then Port Edgar is marvellous! Is it befitting the capital Scotland? Does it attract the whole of Scandinavian sailing to visit Edinburghs undeniable historic attractions. Let me tell you the smallest fishing village in Spain has a better marina than this!
