Or know of someone who does? For an upcoming book I'd like to hear about people with interesting lives (past or present) who live on interesting boats. Not your grand design vessels which cost more than most houses, beautiful though they may be, but boats which work for a living, take their owners on weekend adventures or all the way around the world. They can be large or small, gorgeous or ugly, even barely able to float - and this goes for the owners too! Whether sail, motor, canal or rowing boat, and no matter where in the world, I would love to hear from you. Please drop me a line at upintheair100@gmail.com Thank you very much.

Have you ever seen an Asian couple "living aboard"?

NO! Certainly NOT according to my ex-pat indian neighbour. According to him only a Maharajah would live on a boat and then only on something as big as Brittania and only for a few days at a time with an army of crew and servants, NONE of whom would conduct a dual role incidentally!. To voluntarily "live" on something as "small" as my 44footer would only be contemplated by a very poor and lower cast person and then only out of necessity. He just can't contemplate giving up a hard earned stable existance in a house of good status to become nothing more than a vagrant or water gypsy.

He may have a point!

The Japanese do. Met several cruising in the Pacific.

But that is the only Asian country I can think of (excluding a few wives of western husbands).

Africa is only represented by whites from South Africa and Namibia; South America by Brazil and Argentina.

The largest growth area could well be Eastern Europe - in the last couple of years I've met blue-water yachties from Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovenia.

Is it wealth, is it culture, or is it climate?

Thank you all

Chas - Do you have the Maharajah's email address?? He sounds like he could be an interesting one to mention! Your neighbour would be amazed at some of the people I've heard from - and a few on boats well under 44 foot and without a servant in sight. 27 foot's more the norm so far.

Andrew - I suspect you're right about the relevant nationalities, plus Americans and Western Europeans of course. My challenge is trying to find them.

Jonic - A lovely book. Thank you. I'm looking for people or boats that are somehow 'quirky.' People that float on something which isn't quite normal, or normal boats that have owners who aren't. Some, so far, have designed and built their own craft and one lives on a submarine! I've heard from a person living/travelling on a 60 foot schooner and another who's gone for over 20 years on a 25 foot wooden sailing boat (with his wife and child). Just anything which isn't quite normal to be honest.

Many thanks again to all. I do appreciated it.

I think you will find it a pretty widespread view amongst the asian community so just wander down to your local enclave and ask around.

Books everywhere!! Good luck Eurydice and ukmtc - I'll keep an eye out for them (though I haven't bought a Kindle yet). Thanks for the advice everyone in respect of blogs and strolling down to my local marina's - both are in hand and have so far been fascinating experiences.

Interesting. Have the Chinese cleared out all the thousands of sampan dwellers from Hong Kong then?
