livaboard near Barnstaple

summertime at Instow is OK, but the river spates are a bit daunting in autumn and winter, and unless you can take the ground properly, it can be a bit fraught.

There are occasional moorings just by the big bridge though.

Have you checked with the North Devon Yacht Club for info ?

Chap I met there said they have clamped down and refuse to tolerate any more in the area. One reason was no facilities.

Check with HM

I looked at a boat called Black Pearl moored against the wall at Bideford. The owner told me it was a free port and they had no legal right to charge. I didn't believe it at the time so you would need to check. There are some people living on the small river on the Braunton side of RAF Chivenor, but I have been told there is a lot of crime there. There was a guy who appeared to be living against the quay in Barnstaple itself but he has gone now. There are also a few boats near the Tarka pub which looks to be very sheltered. Access seems to be through the industrial area for most but off the Tarka trail cycle path for some. I hope this helps, if I think of any more I'll add them later.

mooring at bideford is suppost to be around £10/wk but nobody from the coucil bothers to collect the rent be warn there are no facelities for water or tolets (apart from the rarther stinky pubic ones that are locked every night) also the Torridge dries out to a thin trickle at low tide so you need a boat that can take the ground. However there are one or two live aboards including a tug and an ex navy minesweeper which the chap and his girlfriend are making a good job of turning into a liveaboard.

Mum my mums place overlooks the taw estuary. There was a large boat with a green tarp over it just below the new bridge in Barnstaple, been there quite a while. There is also the River Yeo at Rolle Quay. I used to have a boat on the river Caen at Braunton. Mud rather than sand and the access is not good. There is a chap who has wintered in the NDYC for years. Apparently they moved him on this year but he still moors against the quay at Instow in his Macwester.

You won't get 'decent' facilities anywhere. It depends on how much you are willing to compomise.
