Hi All,

I am supposed to be taking my boat from Littlehampton to Brighton Marina on Saturday, our first time out to sea in the new boat.

Weather forecast has been looking good up until this morning, now it is looking like F3/F4 over the weekend.

Boat is 25 ft Larson 240. Plenty of power etc. but not sure if she will be bumpy in a F4 as SWMBO and I have three children with us over the weekend. We are going in the afternoon around high tide to make sure we can get out of Littlehampton with wind and tide against us by the look of things.

I my daughter has been out if rough stuff with me so will be fine but the SWMBO's two haven't been out before (6 and 9 years old) and I don't want to put them off.

Hopefully the wind will drop away again before then.

Problem is ricky, the way this 'summer' has been so far, this could be as good as it gets!

Remember that the wind direction is just as important. You'll be travelling generally east, and, luckily for you, so will the wind/waves, so it should be pretty comfortable really. ;)

Don't let any pressure to move the boat influence your decision, only go if the conditions are favourable, to suit you and the boat

No pressure to move her, this is purely for pleasure. I have to move her to new permanent berth in Chichester Marina in the first week of August.

Actually I will be going east on Saturday to get to Brighton. West on Sunday to get back though:)

F4 should be fine in that boat if the wind and sea are behind you but what about coming back - are you expecting to do that same day?

You should be Ok with a F4 withe the 240, Rick. Saturday showing WSW wind so will be behind you and not at all uncomfy. I find the 240 hull has very little tendency to slam, push it hard enough and it will, but better than average I think.

If you return on Sunday, forecast shows a southerly, about F3. If I had to criticise the 240, it's that it tends to put up a lot of spray, with the wind on the beam, this will be picked up and thrown at you.

It was about F4 when I went from Brighton to Ramsgate last year, Beachy head looked like this.

You'll see what I mean about the spray, although not too bad that day.

This is what a Larson looks like in Brighton!!!!

Hey Geoffs,

Thanks for the info on the Larson and how she will handle. Yours looks good in Brighton.:)

No, we are returning on the Sunday in the afternoon around high tide.

If there is any more than F3 in the wind forward of the beam (which it almost certainly will be) you WILL find the return passage at best tiring and, possibly, wet and very uncomfortable for your family (and, therefore, probably you as well).

Perhaps think about an early start before the wind gets up. It's what ~15nm or so Brighton to Littlehampton so ~1hr.

Mmmm. Might have to think about leaving the hood up for the return trip, that will at least keep the spray off.

I have a Monte 250 which is similar to yours I think. If we get spray (beam sea) we just stick the canopy up and front cover on...sorts it out fine - you may have to reduce your cruise speed a bit to keep things comfortable for the crew. As someone has said, the weather maybe as good as its gets at the mo - enjoy the voyages!

If you find it rough going just come back. Its not that far, so if after 15 minutes or so its uncomfortable, thats 1/4 of the distance, so probably going to be like that most of the way. Only 15 minutes or so and you are back in.

By the way Chichester bar is often a bit rough. Sorry to put a damper on the move there. The Marina is nice though. Others will be along in a moment to say the bar is fine, but in the couple of years I was there it was uncomfortable more often than not. IMO. Maybe I just picked the wrong times.

Hope you have a nice cruise on Saturday.

Hi Frontier,

I've had moorings in Chi before, this is actually my third boat but I've not had a chance to go to sea in her yet, only got her last Friday.

I got her from Larson in Littlehampton which is why she is there and Brighton just seems a nice idea as i've not come this far east before :-)

Hi Ricky_s

sorry thought you were new, but also thought I recognised your id.

Anyway Chi is no problem for you then, just the procession behind the raggies :D
i'm just around the corner in Southsea, might see you around sometime.

Hope you have a great trip in the new boat, enjoy the moment.

Cheers

D
