Yes , I'm annoyed . Having travelled all the way to Lowestoft , with the main reason being a view of the inside of MTB 102 , 120 miles coincidentally each way , I had a chat with the volunteers of 102 , only to find that I wasn't allowed on board because of insurance liability . It's an ex navy MTB , but they are not allowed to let anyone get on unless they charter and therefore have insurance . Madness . If more people were allowed on board , there would be an increased interest , resulting in more revenue . So if anyone wants to sort out the insurance bods , be my guest . The only thing they are doing is cocking everything up for those of us that want to do something .
Rant done , and yes I now help 102 in the only way I can

You are quite right. When I was a kid and I tripped on a paving slab, my Dad would say 'Pick your feet up!' Now you can do the same thing, exagerate a grazed knee into permanent, disfiguring scar, throw in a Case of whiplash, blame it all on some poor b*gger you've never met and walk away with a big, fat cheque. Oh, and if anyone was to suggest it was actually your own fault I wouldn't be surprised if you could do them for mental cruelty too!
It is this inability to accept responsibility (fuelled by greed) which leads to such ridiculous restrictions. You can't (and I'm sure you don't) blame the volunteers. The fault lies with the solicitors as you so rightly say. But, it is also the fault of the greedy 'get rich quick by any means' parasites who sometimes walk through their doors.
Oh! what would I give to see one of them slip on an un-signposted wet floor in the solicitors' offices!

And you thought you were ranting! ..... calm ........Ohm ...........Ohm

I agree, it's daft.

Don't blame the solicitors though. Blame the members of the great British public who are only too happy to try to screw a few bob out of any situation. The solicitors are only acting on their instructions.

Of course one blames the solicitors, they are encouraging this culture - in fact getting people to rack their brains to think of any way they may apportion blame to another party, so they can have part of the take.

To be serious for a moment.......

I think that all they are doing is providing a service. People are greedy and it is the punters who are trying to get money out of the other side. If the punters didn't want to do it the solicitors would soon stop.

True the no win no fee solicitors, who advertise on the box, are vermin....but all they are doing is representing the vermin who want to fleece the "system".

People are greedy, the solicitors are simply recognizing that.

On Smith and Jones last night -

What have solicitors and sperm got in common?

One in 50 thousand makes it to be a human being !

Want to sue - me be my guest.

Uuuurrrrgggggghhh!
What's going on with this damn country! Last week I bought a coffee from a too well known multiple-outlet-coffee chain, as the barista was putting the lid on (paper cup) I said "hold on a sec I'll put some sugar in there", "oh no" she said "can't do that, I have to put the lid on because if I don't and then you spill some on your hand you could sue me". I was shocked! The thought that I'd sue, even if that had happened and it had been so bad that I'd had to be taken to A+E and ended up with 3rd degree bloody burns, wouldn't enter my head, not for a split second, least of all the barista, even if it had been her fault.. It's time we took resposibility for ourselves again and stopped trying to aportion blame to every accident. Grin and bear it 'n' be a man!

The people of this country once had spine, I fear if that spine is ever needed again we will find we are a country of invertibates. I dread to think what the future holds....

A grumpy old (38 year old punk rocker) man.

The local council had been pruning and lopping some of the bush along the foreshore near my home. I asked at the council offices if I could take pieces left behind which were suitable for firewood. They replied that they could not give me permission for legal reasons, but what wasn't there when the mulching team came through wouldn't be missed, would it? I do blame solicitors for encouraging the vermin to sue, for their own venal purposes. I also blame the judiciary for permitting frivolous cases to be heard. If a few of these litigants were to be judged to be 'vexatious litigants' [plus lose their case and have costs awarded against them] the practice would stop pretty quickly.
Peter.

OK , we all agree that the legal system in this country is going to pot , so someone come up with a petition or a movements or action group to stop it . In the meantime , this is the classic BOAT forum , so has anyone got a suggestion on how a classic boat like 102 can get around this . They would get so much more income if they could let people on board .

Ah, but few of them go to court. Much cheaper to settle outside. Pay five grand out of court,or risk 10 grand or more in court.

My local council has just banned Kite flying on HS grounds. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

There's a great story about one of these "sue anyone you can" sales sharks who called at a house. Mr & Mrs Jones told him they had had no accident. But, he said, if you do take photos, witness statements etc. The salesman turns to go and falls over Little Jimmy, breaking his leg.

Mr & Mrs Jones promptly take photos witness statements etc and sue the salesman!

As Shakespeare puts it, in \"Henry VI, Part 2\"

"First, let's kill all the lawyers!"

Now, seriously, those concerned with MTB 102 could look for another insurance provider if they feel that they are losing revenue. The Unfair Contract Terms Act prevents the use of a disclaimer if the public are dealing as consumers with a corporation, but that may not be the case here.

The railway preservation societies have loads of relevant experience, surely?

Re: As Shakespeare puts it, in \"Henry VI, Part 2\"

if the restorers of MTB102 have accepted an insurance which prevents potential investors from visiting, then they are not helping themselves. Or are they trying to keep it as a private club?
