The Dorset Echo reports that the Fretum on passage from Antwerp to Casablanca carrying 4,800 tonnes of ammonium sulphate sought shelter in Weymouth Bay on Thursday after suffering a breach in the hull and developing a list. The ship has had a temporary repair and will enter Portland Port for a more permanent repair today.

At the same time an 8000 tonne chemical tanker on passage to India for scrapping had to anchor in Weymouth Bay after having insufficient fuel to continue her journey.

It's not just yachts that may need the shelter of Weymouth Bay during the Olympics. ;)

Aeolian Sky

Remember diving on a ship called the Aeolian Sky in that area, must be over twenty years ago, seem to recall that she developed a list and sank, she had a deck cargo of Range Rovers and BMWs, very good dive site a touch on the deep side though in those days, but I guess with nitro gasses that sport divers use these days its a doddle.

If the weather had been as bad as it was when Aeolian Sky met her fate there is a good chance that Fretum would have joined her and become another fine dive site.

A manifest of several thousand tonnes of Ammonium Phosphate is not likely to get you entry anywhere near Weymouth during the olympics. They'll probably sink you on sight :) :)

Every ship will be carrying one BMW, one Big Mac and a bottle of Coke. That will guarantee free passage.
