We are in the river Alde at the moment, on a mooring at Aldeburgh after three days at anchor in the Butley river. Been here many times before but something's different? ---- No light from Orfordness lighthouse. I knew it had been switched off but it took me a few days to realise what a difference it makes to the general landscape.
Previously working in construction I had all sorts of grief with building listings and "the associated environment" ie; a manhole cover outside a grade 1 listed building.
So how about a campaign based on historical relevance to keeping lighthouses intact and LIT? Bloody Houses of Parliament, and all sorts of useless buildings are listed so why not the light from lighthouses? The Stevenson's would have been horrified!

List the buildings by all means but it may be realistic to accept that they are increasingly becoming redundant. It would be nice to preserve one or two as working examples but I'm not sure that they will need to be constantly lit in years to come. I wonder what the electric bills are like?

FWIW I suspect that the Stevenson's would think that GPS is wonderful and would have no problem with the lights being switched off.
