Hi guys, could anyone tell me what would be a correct level of oil in the gearbox of Lister Peter AC2W?
I have few manuals but all of them say "check the oil level" without any further precision. The oil stick has no marks.

The actual level is about 1/3. Would that be a norm?

And by the way, I have tried to find a replacement oil for this gearbox and found I should go for DEXRON III oil. Any comments?

Thanks for replies.

You should be able to call the guys at Lister Petter in Dursley and get an answer. I have always found them to be great help for info ( they even scanned and emailed me an ancient wiring diagram for a long disused MoD bunker pump set). As for oil type? You should again contact the manufacturer. I ran a boat with Lister twin driving a twin disc g/box and I'm pretty sure it was 120 centistoke gear oil from Shell we used? But! Different boxes have different specs.
An email or phone call to Lister with all the serial numbers etc will get you the exact answers.

What gearbox do you have, mine is a Hurth and has a dipstick with the level marked, a third sounds too much to me but willing to be corrected.

The gearbox in the video looks like a hurth. If yours is a Hurth then ATF (eg DEXRON) is certainly the correct oil. The amount varies with model (eg HBW100 is 0.35 litres).

There should be an ident plate on the box.

The following links to Hurth manuals may help.
