We have safely arrived in Lagos, 2 days ahead of plan -

Planning to press on to Lisbon, making the most of calm weather and available time.

The YM Cruising companion (thanks T-K) say its a bit risky leaving the boat there unattended for any length of time. The Imray Pilot says the marina pontoons have good security with gated pontoons.

Anybody have any real experience?

I think it depends on where you're planning on leaving the boat. The marina under the bridge was a bit grotty when I was there (3 years ago) and security wasn't great (it's noisy under the bridge too!). There's also Doca de Alcantara a bit further up but I'm not familalr with it.

It's great sailing up the river into Lisbon. I would suggest staying a night there and then leaving the boat for any extended period in Cascais which is only about 10 miles away and has good train connections (30 mins, dead cheap) into Lisbon.

thanks chaps - only snag with Cascais is the 43E per night in high season /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif but it does appear to be the better option.

Just made a prat of myself here by waiting for the reception office to open at 0900, grumbling about the laxadasical Portuguese timekeeping. Then an official came along to tell me that it was only 0800 - one hour time difference with Spain /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Stayed in Alcantara last year. It is close to the container port but apart from visual impact there are no adverse affects. The marina is very protected and the security seemed fine with coded gates. Not 24 hours attended office I seem to recall. The port police offices are close by which may well help. You are also close enough to the restaurants etc in the bridge area but not so close to be worried by the continual noise that comes down from the bridge 24/7. Good chandlery under bridge. The costs were reasonable and much less than Cascais which is expensive.

Alcantara gives you easy acccess to the trams and buses and it is only a short walk to a supermarket and grog shop.

Absolutely agree with last poster. I have wintered there several times - the security is as good as anywhere.

A major advantage though is that the summer tarrif is the same as the winter tarrif - they don't have a summer rate as such - hence they will be stacks cheaper than Cascais.

Cascais marina is fine, and the town is very nice, but the marina cost is pretty steep if you are only leaving the boat there and not enjoying the ambience yourself....

I moored at Doca de Alcantara for several days last summer.Very good security near to town and railway/metro.Cant remember price but think that it was about the average for the area and date,If you do go in to alcantara watch out for the pedestrian bridge(swinging) at the entrance

Similar to DJE nothing helpfull to add but glad your return passage is going well. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
