Starting to muse about the summer. Is it practical and fun to take a finkeeler of 2m draught east to west through the Limfjord as a kick off for a passage west to Inverness?

Not a direct answer since it's not something I've done, but it did stir memories. In 1970 I was in a party that kayaked round the island of Morse (sp?) in the Limfjord. I do remember that the waters were lit with sectored lighthouses so I suspect that commercial traffic was being catered for, so 2m draught probably OK. I'm currently away from home so unable to access my out of date and possibly not entirely legit world chart collection to confirm... I do remember the Limfjord as having an uncomfortably steep chop (shallow water), but a nice area: Thisted has particularly fond memories. No idea about berthing or anchoring, however.

I went through twice when working on a square rigger with 3.5m draught. We did actually ground once but it was the wrong side of a buoy! You will have no problem with 2m. Well worth it, interesting passage and worth planning an overnight or longer at anchor by the Islands half way through, can't remember the names now. On my list of things I want to do again.

We did it west to east in a najad 440 to avoid bad weather. It took longer than going around. It was quite shallow in places, you really needed to stick closely to the channel.

We see bigger boats, presumably with deeper draught, all the time. The channels seem well marked. It just looks like a series of lakes, fairly low lying country all around. I could look efter yer boatie should ye need tae leave it fer a while, or jump oan fer ra sail hame sae lang as it includes ra Caley

Did this passage in 2007 in 1.8m draught fin keeler. No problems with depth as kept to channel, which is narrow in parts. Possible to anchor just off channel in some places. Entrance at Aalborg prone to silting at that time.
Thyboron was a very sedate harbour and a good place to wait for your weather window to cross to Inverness. Good choice of route if early in the year due to weather and sea conditions round the top of Denmark. Enjoy.

We spent a couple of days cruising it, and found it very pleasant. Would happily do it again.

You might be restricted in some spots, but overall, as previous posters have said as long as you follow the channel markers you will be fine. Aalborg is a nice town to visit. The islands in the central area are lovely, but get very busy in summer. As for waiting near the entrance, we preferred Lemvig over Thyboron, but you can easily look into both and decide.

Done it w to e some years ago, drawing 2mtrs.

Plenty of water over 85% of voyage, stick to buoyed channel in the other bit. Totally delightful cruising area, allow plenty of time to explore. To add to the above posts,

Fur, Doverode, lemvig, Hals are all delightful. be certain to do Marriger fijord as well before getting to Hals.

Strong streams near Tyberon, which is still a fishing harb. Would agree re Lemvig for waiting, I spent a week here at anchor waiting for the family to come out from uk, having soloed up from the Netherlands

I have no recent knowledge, but in 1973 or 74 I went all the way through the Limfjord, East to West, in a Royal Navy Seaward Defence Boat. She was 34 metres long and about 2 metres draught. No real problems that I can recall, and we had a great time, including a memorable run ashore in Aalborg, and an invitation to a barbecue at the British Consul's summer house by the beach. Happy days! I had almost forgotten about that trip till this thread reminded me.
