Note that you have recently been to Limehouse.
I will be going from Ipswich to Limehouse next weekend, to use marina as base for ExCel Exhibition.

Any problems at Limehouse?

Excel

Ooh please report on facilities etc for Excel since LBS seems to be planning to move there, is it next year? Where is it, trains, tubes, how do we get there, where to stay , restaurants, nearest Macdonalds, museums, ponts of interest in the area etc.

Please do full in depth MBM\MBY Ports of Call type report a la John Matthews and Crumlidge. Humour to be included. Report to include flavour of local language as seen on Eastenders. "Cor luvva Duck, Ricky etc"

Do we all have to come by boat then, and will there be room for tcm's Leopard?

From a access point of view Limehouse is the best, from a facilties angle probably the worst. From an access point of view St Katherines is probably worst but looking at general facilities St Katherines is great. In short if you are merely breaking a journey then using Limehouse makes sense. If you are looking for a regular berth or staying a few days it has to be St Katherines. I leave it to others to mention Chelsea and South Dock.

H Neptune Byrons right about access lock operates HW +/- 4.5hrs compared to South Dock HW -2.5 + 1.5
The visitors berth was all that was available recently (I'm 37ft LOA) and disappointing in that it had
no 240v power. In the conditions last Monday with frost still about it ment I had no engine room heaters,
however I was only there one night. The Marina itself is as you can guess very sheltered, and
and secure, and is ideal for Dockland Light Railway, and ExCel, hence your choice I imagine.
The staff are friendly, if you call (0207 5372828) ask for Vicky and mention my name and the boat
Clive Neighbour boat "Finola" I also know a couple who are resident in the marina Tony & Maggie
who are very helpful.

We parked there a couple of years ago for the Millenium bash and we found it fine. The lock into the basin does'nt open very often so you may have to ponce about in the river waiting for a while but it gives you a chance to admire Tony's Dome which, whilst it cost more than the national debt of the average third world country, is somewhat spectacular. After having locked thru', which takes forever, you zoom along a bit of canal until you get to the marina. The staff were v. friendly but needed convincing that average motorboat is wider than average narrowboat in our case as they tried to insert us into 6 foot wide berth. Leccy and water on pontoon but dont remember any other facilities. Card entry + lots of beardy liveaboards about so security in marina seems OK but parking, when we were there, was not secured
There's a McD's opposite but dont remember any other facilities in the way of shops, restaurants etc. Also took ages to find taxis.
Personally, I would stick boat in splendid St Kats and drive a bit longer every day to/from Excel (opposite way to rush hour traffic). All facilities to sustain human life nearby plus much closer to London fleshpots

Hi Mikeef I have to say that I have had no probs getting in and out of Limehouse what with the 4.5 hr slot
eitherside of HW. I call the lock keeper and he or she normally responded pretty quick. Also there are two
waiting pontoons one before the bridge and one after by the lock gates.
Your write about the beared live aboards one guy Tony & his wife Maggie helped me on my onward journery
to Penton Hook last week, cos my crew member went home. Wheres the McD?, only seen the Barley Mow pub right on the river
by the lock and the yacht club. By the way how's he gonner drive to ExCel after he's sailed in to Kats
or otherwise?.Wheres the car? Light railway a lot easier.

As I said in my posting we went 2 years ago. We waited the best part of 1 hr to lock in and out after we radioed the lock keeper and there was no pontoon in the river at the time. My reference to the liveaboards was not meant to be derogatory - in fact we had a drink with some on one evening. There is or was definitely a McD's within a short walk of the marina 'coz it was the first thing my brat noticed
Re Excel, I dont know whether Neptune is planning to use car or DLR. All I'm saying is that I'd rather stay in the more congenial surroundings at St Kats and bear the extra journey time

Thanks for all your input.
Looks like this weekends out because of weather, will try next week or following Saturday.
Have decided on St Kats, as I will be there for a 5 nights.

Tip of the day... if staying at St Kats for 5 days pay the weekly rate. You will find it works out slightly cheaper. Give my regards to Ron please.
