Light shining through GRP deck

Hi all,

Should day light be able to penetrate through the Hull (and head lining) of a Moody 39 in the fore cabin? It doesn't appear to anywhere else in the boat but the rest of boat is well lit up.

We can even make out the lines of shade from the decal stripes through our M422 hull & coachroof, when the sun is shining on it... But I have complete faith and every confidence in her structural integrity!

Light easily penetrates single skin fibreglass. Hull sides even with a thin lining often allow light through. That's assuming it isn't either foam or balsa sandwich construction of course, in which case you would be in trouble!

grp is translucent and can be used to make windows of the sort that let light through but you cant see through - if you see what I mean..

usually modern decks are balsa sandwich and so are completely opaque. presumably Moody have strengthened your deck in another way since it isnt sandwich.

This is a photo of a piece of Moody 422 coachroof that I salvaged when we had the extra porthole fitted to the aft heads:

It is balsa sandwiched between 2 layers of GRP, but I can assure you, it is NOT completely opaque!

Does anyone know if the Moody 39 deck is balsa snadwiched? When I examined the deck, there are stringers that strengthen the deck underneath.
