I thought this idea was so brilliant that it deserved it's own Fred:

Pondering on this question of light dues, I think I have the perfect answer. Why not put coin slots in all buoys?

We could then practice coming alongside under sail and dropping a 50p piece into the slot. The channel buoys could be used for dropping off surplus Euros on the way home.

Sorted!

Brilliant idea .. however I'm going to learn to dive so I can make a fortune out of all the missed drop ins .. if it anything like the ratio of successful pick ups under sail I'll make 5 times as much as TH!

Not if they fitted big baskets.

Then if you fitted remote payment on cards, you could charge power boats a enviromental charge, polusion charge, fuel surcharge as they pass, then yachts being enviromentally friendly, could have a credit, which would pay our light dues.

Re: Technology to the rescue

And if it had an AIS thingy on it you could find it in the first place. I've feeling that this could be a circular argument.

Gotcha!

But then, if I followed the AIS thread correctly you have to use a radio frequency to detect said thingy, so I'll collect my money a. from the radio rather than light or b. from the extra diesel you've used to avoid it.

Re: Gotcha!

Please can I opt to have the charge collected via a penny per litre on diesel? I used 42 litres last season, which was a bit much but it was a very light airs summer.

If they are:

Dear Elder Brethern .. the day you start charging the leisure industry is the day you sow the seed of your own destruction. When you become a tax raiser you will be required to be accountable and as such it is inevitable that the duties you perform will be incorporated in the MCA. And that nice wee boat of your's ... can't see that being funded by the taxpayer.. so if I were you I'd let sleeping dogs lie.
