Lifted in - and straight out again

Stargazer went back in the water yesterday.

Over winter we've had a new log fitted, with a new hull fitting. We also had all the through hull fittings and seacocks checked. SWMBO wanted the guys in the yard to get on board the boat after lift-in, and check for leaks. I arranged this - "No problem". SWMBO fretted and got me to remind them the day before lift in - which I did. She'd decided that she'd go down there yesterday, put some stuff on the boat, and convince herself that all was well.

Sure enough, when she got on board, there was water in the bilges. She called one of the chaps in the yard, and the problem was traced to a slight crack around the depth sounder transducer (which hadn't been touched over winter). So it needs re-bedding. Hence a lift-out. More expense. Grrrr.

Meanwhile SWMBO is more than ever convinced that the boat is an assembly of potential crises sailing in loose formation...

I have a theory about getting work done. Do it yourself. No-one else cares like you do.

However, I have to modify that opinion when I see some of the bodgers' bollocks that I've found on my latest project.

Drain Bung U/S. No worries mate, cut off the exposed flange and bed a smaller bung assembly inside the old one. Don't use use Sikaflex though, much too expensive, use some grey putty-like stuff that nearly sets.

Arrrggh

Bad luck, but your wife's comment "Meanwhile SWMBO is more than ever convinced that the boat is an assembly of potential crises sailing in loose formation..." reminds me of the definition of a jumbo jet as
"A million rivets flying in formation"
or a badly maintained jumbo jet
"A million rivets flying in loose formation."

So when is she going back in again?

Probably about 10 days /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I might be forced to do some gardening over Easter /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I suppose there is nobody to moan at if it hasn't been touched.

My theory with anything that sticks through the bottom of the boat, anodes etc, is to let the yard do them. Then if they leak on re-launch (and they never have) the yard pays for the lift out. Replacing anodes is an hour's labour at the most and not worth the contigent liability of DIY.

John, you obviously didnt splosh enough antifoul around the subject area to cover the crack. Tsk. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Hard luck. Not a cheap hobby is it?

My M31 went in yesterday - had a nice day fiddling about with new ropes (new pontoons) running the engine, doing this that and the other. Stern gland a bit too drippy when running in gear - knew I should have repacked it. Tighten it up, crank the greaser and hope. No leaks despite having the gear box out and disconnecting hoses - phew. Summer's here /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Got son and grandchildren staying for two nights so won't be over until later Saturday morning. Hope to be around Monday if you're coming back then. Have a good weekend - drifting or motoring!
