Leaving all the 'keel argument' aside lets try and learn something. It's does seem that these lads were well preperared but maybe not ready for a catostrophic keel failure (whatever the cause). In other words it seems the liferaft was still stored. Being quite new to this lark I have noticed the trend for tidying up the decks and putting everything in lockers, including liferafts! So it's dark (possibly) some crew on watch some managing the water ingress then suddenly an already damaged (hence water ingress) keel fails, the yacht flips, you maybe harnessed on you maybe below, it's freezing, you maybe injured or in shock from sudden immersion; How the hell are you meant to wrestle a large raft out of an upside down locker, get it clear of all lines etc and then deploy it?
If a raft is stored on deck and fitted with hydro-static release you may have a better chance but then if the search hadn't stopped early on, who knows, just thoughts. Respect to the families.
