I would like to buy a new self inflate lifejacket for my four year old daughter but seem to be getting mixed views as to whether she is old/big enough for one.

Someone said that she needs to be as old as her sister (7) before she can have one as when the jacket inflates when hitting the water it could damage her vertebra.

Of course we do not want to do harm in any way but her lifejacket is so big a bulky and she gets very hot in it (and of course wants to be like her big sister).

Do children's lifejacket, like adults, go on weight or is it age?

Forget age go by size/weight. I took the kids with me when buying so they could try them on. In the end I went to Compass and ordered them from there. But it was a mistake. The kids love jumping off the boat with their lifejackets on........now I've gone back to the old style. It was costing too much in rearming. If your kids don't jump off the boat then fine. Unfortunatly mine do and they keep coming back. Can't seem to loose them!

We had a similar problem with our young niece, as previously posted autos and manual inflate were reall not suitable even with a crotch strap. In the end we found the best solution to be an old style jacket when we were at sea or mooring etc and then a smaller/lighter "bouyancyaid" ala JetSki/Windsurfer with crotch strap, for playing around in. Seemed to work very well and gave us and her the necessary confidence. All the very best with it
