How many of us leisure sailors get their lifejackets professionally serviced annually?
The instructor on a course recently wouldn't allow my wife to use her own jacket because it hadn't been serviced professionally. His view is to do it yourself quarterly and by a professional annually. I do mine annually, and inspect before an offshore passage (not sure why that makes a difference, but it's what I do!)
I've always been very happy doing it myself (24 hour inflation test, capsule condition & date, gas bottle condition & weight). What is the collective view here - am I unusually reckless?
